The sinuses<\/a> are air-filled spaces in the face that are connected to your nasal passages. Their job is to moisturize the air you breathe as well as produce mucus that helps trap bacteria and foreign particles that are inhaled. However, they can sometimes become blocked, leading to sinus pressure. Below we review some strategies for relieving this discomfort.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Drinking water can help thin mucus, making it easier for it to drain. Try to drink at least eight glasses of water that are eight or more ounces per day. You can also consume other beverages and foods containing water such as ice cubes, tea, broth and water-based fruits and veggies.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Inhale Steam<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

In a similar vein, humidity in your environment can also help thin mucus and moisturize the nasal passages. Showering in hot water, carefully inhaling steam from boiling water or running a humidifier can all help relieve sinus pressure. For additional relief, you can add eucalyptus oil to your shower or humidifier, which contains cineole, an ingredient that is known to help with symptoms of acute sinusitis<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Rinse with Saline<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

A saline rinse is one of the most effective home remedies for acute sinusitis\/sinus pressure. You can either use a saline spray from Herold\u2019s Pharmacy<\/a>, or you can flush out the sinuses with saline solution using a Neti pot.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Elevate Your Head During Sleep<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

A good night\u2019s rest can help your body heal, as you can produce more white blood cells during sleep. When you lie down to rest for the night, be sure to elevate your head with pillows so that it\u2019s higher than your heart. This can help prevent sinus pressure.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Exercise<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Physical activity boosts blood circulation and can temporarily relieve congestion. Try some moderate exercise like yoga to find relief from sinus pressure.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Take a Decongestant<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Decongestants are available over-the-counter at the pharmacy in liquid, tablet and nasal spray forms. You must only use decongestants for two to three days; if symptoms persist, see a doctor.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

See an ENT Physician<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

If your sinus problems persist longer than a week, you should see an ENT physician. They can determine the cause of your sinus problems and prescribe antibiotics, if necessary. <\/p>\n\n\n\n
