What Is a Tonsil Infection?
Tonsillitis causes the tonsils to swell and leads to a sore throat. The condition is most common among children ages 5 and 15. It can be caused by a virus, such as the one that causes the common cold or flu. It can also be the result of a bacterial infection, like group A streptococcus bacteria, which is responsible for strep throat.
What Does a Tonsil Infection Look Like in Children?
Common signs of pediatric tonsillitis include:
- Fever
- Sore throat
- Difficulty swallowing
- Bad breath
- Tenderness in the lymph nodes or glands in the neck
- Pain in the head, neck or stomach
- Scratchy voice
If your child hasn’t learned to talk yet, keep an eye out for drooling, difficulty swallowing, not wanting to eat or unusual levels of fussiness.
Are Pediatric Tonsil Infections Contagious?
While tonsillitis is not contagious, many of the infections that cause it can be easily spread to others. This is another reason it’s important to visit a medical professional to receive treatment.
How Do ENTs Diagnose and Treat Tonsillitis?
Your otolaryngologist will ask about your child’s symptoms, along with their length and severity. In addition to performing a general physical exam, they may take a throat swab.
If your child’s tonsillitis is caused by a bacterial infection, your doctor will prescribe antibiotics. If the symptoms are caused by a virus, they will likely recommend rest, fluids and certain pain relievers.
