We’ve written before on the benefits of getting your hearing tested regularly, but we also know that it might feel like a waste of time if you’re getting your hearing checked every year and there haven’t been any changes. We want to reassure you: it is NOT a waste of time! Whether you already have a hearing loss diagnosis and are on a treatment plan, or if you haven’t detected hearing loss yet, you should still prioritize getting your hearing checked consistently, even if the symptoms aren’t changing.

If You Already Have Hearing Loss
If you’ve already been diagnosed with hearing loss and you’re wearing hearing aids, you should bring them in at least once a year to have your devices and hearing checked. It probably feels really encouraging if you’re doing this and your hearing test results have remained consistent! However, don’t let that renewed confidence deter you from continuing to check in every year.
Hearing loss may slow or even stall, but it will progress, especially if you have age-related hearing loss (presbycusis) or noise-induced hearing loss. You may be in a slowed or stalled phase right now, but it’s still critical to track your hearing loss.
Additionally, seeing your audiologist on a yearly basis allows them to perform a deep cleaning of your devices and address any minor repairs that may be needed. Doing this will extend the life of your hearing aids and keep them working at their best.
If Your Hearing Is In “Normal” Range
If you’re over the age of 65, you should have your hearing tested every year. This is because hearing loss is nearly ubiquitous in older adults—65% of adults over 71 and 96% of adults over 90 have hearing loss. This suggests that your risk of developing hearing loss increases each year. Being proactive about catching hearing loss can save you a lot of trouble down the line.
Consider treating the annual hearing check the same way as an annual doctor’s visit: ideally, you won’t notice any changes or discover any causes for concern, but it’s always better to check than to wait until the problem evolves.
