Entropion and ectropion are conditions that affect your eyelid. Entropion causes your eyelid to turn in and rub against your cornea, and ectropion causes your eyelid to turn out and not touch your eye. Both are usually the result of aging.
These conditions are typically alleviated through surgery, and our team at Charleston ENT & Allergy will support you through each step of the treatment process.
Candidates for Ectropion/Entropion Repair
- Your eyelids turn inward or outward from the normal position
- Your eyelashes scratch against your eye
- You have frequent eye irritation, tearing or redness
- You often have eye infections or dry eyes
How the Procedure Works
Ectropion/entropion repair is an outpatient procedure performed under local anesthesia. It typically takes 30 minutes to an hour, depending on whether both eyes are included.
Ectropion Repair
Your surgeon will tighten the muscles and tendons that hold your eyelid, then properly reposition them.
Entropion Repair
Your surgeon will remove excess eyelid tissue and tighten the remaining skin and muscle, which pulls your lower eyelid into its proper position against your eye.
Results and Recovery
Most patients can resume their normal routine within 10-14 days following the procedure, though you should avoid strenuous exercise or lifting for one month. There will be swelling and bruising around your eyes for the first week.
Results from ectropion/entropion repair are typically permanent. Most patients notice relieved symptoms when the swelling is reduced.
